Article 2D/2D BiOIO3/g-C3N4 S-scheme hybrid heterojunction with face-to-face interfacial contact for effective photocatalytic H2 production and norfloxacin degradation A two-dimensional (2D)/2D hybrid heterojunction with face-to-face interfacial assembly is a desirable dimensionality design with significant potential for various photocatalytic applications due to the large interfacial contact area, which facilitates charge migration and separation. Herein, we developed an efficient 2D/2D hybrid heterojunction consisting of BiOIO 3 nanoplates (BIO) and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (CN) using a simple but effective in situ growth method for photocatalytic aqueous antibiotic degradation and H 2 generation. The face-to-face interfacial assembly of the BIO and CN components in the BIO/CN hybrid heterojunction was verified using electron microscopy. Remarkably, the BIO/CN hybrid heterojunction outperformed both the BIO and CN counterparts in terms of norfloxacin degradation and H 2 generation under simulated solar light irradiation. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance of the hybrid catalyst remained nearly unchanged throughout five consecutive test runs. The exceptional performance and stability of the hybrid catalyst are attributable to its extended optical absorption range, large interfacial contact area provided by the face-to-face assembly in the 2D/2D hybrid configuration, and enhanced photoexcited charge separation efficiency and redox power of the separated charges, which are supported by an efficient S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This study illuminates the rational construction of novel 2D/2D S-scheme hybrid heterojunction photocatalysts with practical applications in environmental remediation and sustainable energy generation. Article A phase I/II study of ARO-HSD, an RNA interference therapeutic, for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis Background & Aims: Loss-of-function HSD17613 mutations protect against the development of chronic liver disease. HSD17613 inhibition represents a potential approach to treat liver diseases, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). ARO-HSD is an RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutic designed to selectively reduce expression of HSD17#13 mRNA in hepatocytes. In this study, we evaluated the effects of ARO-HSD in normal healthy volunteers (NHVs) and patients with confirmed or clinically sus-pected NASH. Methods: The safety, tolerability, and pharmacodynamics of ARO-HSD were evaluated in 32 NHVs and 18 patients with confirmed/clinically suspected NASH. Double-blind NHV cohorts received single escalating doses of ARO-HSD (25, 50, 100, or 200 mg) or placebo subcutaneously on Day 1. Open-label patient cohorts received ARO-HSD (25, 100, or 200 mg) subcutaneously on Days 1 and 29. Liver biopsy was performed pre-dose and on Day 71 to evaluate expression levels of HSD17#13 mRNA and protein. Results: ARO-HSD treatment was well tolerated with no treatment-related serious adverse events or drug discontinuations. The most frequently reported treatment-emergent adverse events were mild injection site reactions, which were short in duration. Mean changes in hepatic HSD17#13 mRNA from baseline to Day 71 were:-56.9% (25 mg),-85.5% (100 mg), and-93.4% (200 mg). The mean HSD17#13 mRNA reduction was 78.6% (p <0.0001) across pooled cohorts. Hepatic HSD17613 protein levels were similarly reduced across doses. In patients, mean changes in alanine aminotransferase from baseline to Day 71 were-7.7% (25 mg),-39.3% (100 mg), and-42.3% (200 mg) (p <0.001 for pooled cohorts). Conclusions: ARO-HSD was well tolerated at doses <-200 mg. This proof-of-concept study demonstrated that short-term treatment with ARO-HSD reduces hepatic HSD17#13 mRNA and protein expression, which is accompanied by reductions in alanine aminotransferase. Article Airborne hyperspectral imaging for early diagnosis of kimchi cabbage downy mildew using 3D-ResNet and leaf segmentation Kimchi cabbage (Brassica rapa pekinensis), one of the main agricultural products in Korea, is susceptible to downy mildew disease infections. Infected plants develop yellow spots (chlorosis) on the upper (adaxial) side of the infected leaf, undermining cabbage production and quality. An early detection method to recognize and treat the disease is crucial to prevent downy mildew and lessen its physical effects on plants. Hyperspectral imaging can capture data from a broad spectrum, which can be utilized to detect disease occurrence before any visible symptoms appear. Combining a hyperspectral camera with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can provide a nondestructive, field-scale disease detection system. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural network (CNN) models were used to simultaneously account for the spectral and spatial features of the disease to enable automatic disease detection. Using a 3D-residual network (ResNet) CNN with four residual blocks, each followed by a rectified linear unit activation function and a max-pooling layer, helped achieve an overall accuracy of 0.876 and a diseased class accuracy of 0.873. Disease severity was estimated by grouping nearby diseased leaves using the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise clustering algorithm to achieve a 27.07 % relative error or a 1.08 level difference from the actual. Article Application of auto power shift (APS) controller for minimizing fuel consumption and performance evaluation of an agricultural tractor Minimizing the fuel consumption of an agricultural tractor is the primary concern of researchers worldwide. Thus, developing a suitable controller that can reduce the fuel consumption of agricultural tractor is necessary. In this study, an automatic power shift (APS) controller that can select different engine modes, such as conventional, APS power, and APS ECO, is introduced. The objectives of this study are to verify the APS controller for asphalt driving, analyze the power delivery and fuel consumption of the tractor using different engine modes, and suggest the most suitable, efficient, and economical engine mode for the plowing operation. During asphalt driving, APS ECO mode has the lowest engine power of approximately 31.79 kW. Its fuel consumption is nearly 6.02 L/h, which is lower than those in the conventional and APS power modes by almost 43.84 and 21.10 % per working hour, respectively. However, the axle powers in all engine modes have no significant differences owing to the same forward speed of the tractor. The results prove the reliability of the APS controller performance. During the plowing operation, the engine power and fuel consumption in the APS ECO mode are approximately 70.29 kW and 18.46 L/h, respectively, which are lower than those in the conventional and APS power modes. However, the power delivery efficiency in the APS ECO mode is lower than that in the conventional mode, and the slip ratio is the highest among all engine modes. In addition, the tractive efficiency in the conventional mode, which is approximately 63.56 %, is the highest among all engine modes. However, the effective field capacity in the APS ECO mode for plowing is approximately 1.52 ha/h, which is the highest among all engine modes. The comparative analysis also shows that the working load in the APS ECO mode is located in the ungoverned region of the engine characteristic map, which can avoid sudden engine turn-off during large fluctuations in the working load. Furthermore, the fuel consumption in the APS ECO mode for plowing is reduced by almost 23.37 and 15.59 % compared with those in the conventional and APS power modes, respectively. Considering the fuel consumption and working load, the APS ECO mode is more economical than the APS power and conventional engine modes for both asphalt driving and plowing operations. Therefore, as the most economical, efficient, and suitable mode, this study recommends using the APS ECO mode for the agricultural tractors when performing the agricultural operations. Siddique, Md. Article Bifunctional S-scheme hybrid heterojunction comprising CdS nanorods and BiOIO 3 nanosheets for efficient solar-induced antibiotic degradation and highly-selective CO 2 reduction The development of a bifunctional photocatalyst that can be utilized for both energy conversion and environmental remediation is of great practical significance. In addition, an S-scheme charge transfer process can assist a photocatalyst in efficiently separating photoexcited electrons and holes while maintaining the strong reducibility and oxidizability of the former and the latter, respectively. We developed a bifunctional S-scheme hybrid photocatalyst comprising CdS nanorods and BiOIO 3 (BIO) nanosheets for efficient antibiotic degradation and cocatalyst- and sacrificial reagent-free CO 2 reduction. The combination of visiblelight-responsive one-dimensional (1D) CdS and UV-light-responsive 2D BIO resulted in a CdS/BIO hybrid photocatalyst with effective 1D/2D (line) interfacial contact and a broadened optical absorption range. Notably, the CdS/BIO hybrid exhibited exceptional diclofenac degradation and mineralization as well as outstanding CO 2 reduction activity for CO production, with 95.4% CO selectivity over H 2 production. The exceptional performance of the hybrid catalyst is primarily attributed to the accelerated photoexcited charge transfer caused by the 1D/2D line interfacial contact and the high charge separation and strong redox power of the separated charges, both of which stem from the effective S-scheme charge transfer process. In addition, photocorrosion of CdS was substantially mitigated, resulting in the high photocatalytic performance of the hybrid catalyst even after repeated test runs. Article Enhanced thermoelectric properties of NbCoSn half-Heuslers through in-situ nanocrystallization of amorphous precursors during the consolidation process Tailoring nanostructures is a general approach used to obtain enhanced thermoelectric properties for half-Heusler compounds because the wide areas of grain and phase boundaries could be scattering centers that lower lattice thermal conductivity. However, a common fabrication method based on the sintering of crystalline precursors crushed from as-cast alloy ingots has limitations in obtaining a homogeneous microstructure without microsized impurity phases, owing to residual elemental segregation from cast-ing. In this study, we used amorphous NbCoSn alloys as a precursor for the sintered specimen to obtain a homogeneous NbCoSn bulk specimen without microsized impurity phases and segregation, which led to the enhanced Seebeck coefficient due to the high purity of the half-Heusler phase after crystalliza-tion. Moreover, superplasticity originating from amorphous features enabled the powders to be largely deformed during the sintering process, even at a low sintering temperature (953 K). This resulted in less oxidation at both, the grain boundary and the interior, as the O diffusion pathway was blocked during the sintering process. As a result, the NbCoSn0.95Sb0.05 specimen using an amorphous precursor exhibited an enhanced zT of 0.7, due to the increase in the power factor and a decrease in lattice thermal conductivity compared to the specimen using a crystalline precursor.& COPY; 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.
