Article Ultra-fast, cost-effective and scale-up preparation of lightweight electromagnetic interference shielding graphite worm-based aerogel Lightweight aerogels with conductive properties have been widely considered promising materials for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. However, there are still challenges to achieve large-scale preparation of aerogels through simple, convenient and economical methods. In this study, graphite worm-based aerogel (GWA) with high electrical conductivity was prepared by one-step mixing graphite worms with a gel-like product made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glycerol and borax. The phase separation between the hydrophobic graphite worm and the hydrophilic polymer enables excellent retention of the pore structure. The "worm-like" porous structural framework promotes the scattering and reflection of EM waves, effectively attenuating EM energy. The results indicate that the developed GWA material exhibits a high shielding performance of 58.0 dB. The existence of a three-dimensional conductive network endows the GWA material with excellent Joule heating performance (146.1 degrees C) at 10 V. In addition, the GWA material exhibited EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) retention of 98.1 % after three recycling cycles, which guarantees its service life in practical applications. This study provides a feasible solution for the large-scale preparation of aerogels with excellent EMI shielding performance, effectively alleviating the contradiction between the construction of porous structures and large-scale production. Article AI-based deformable hippocampal mesh reflects hippocampal morphological characteristics in relation to cognition in healthy older adults Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived hippocampus measurements have been associated with different cognitive domains. The knowledge of hippocampal structural deformations as we age has contributed to our understanding of the overall aging process. Different morphological hippocampal shape analysis methods have been developed, but it is unclear how their principles relate and how consistent are the published results in relation to cognition in the normal elderly in the light of the new deep-learning-based (DL) state-of-the-art modeling methods. We compared results from analyzing the hippocampal morphology using manuallygenerated binary masks and a Laplacian- based deformation shape analysis method, with those resulting from analyzing SynthSeg-generated hippocampal binary masks using a DL method based on the PointNet architecture, in relation to different cognitive domains. Whilst most previously reported statistically significant associations were also replicated, differences were also observed due to 1) differences in the binary masks and 2) differences in sensitivity between the methods. Article Chitosan-gallic acid conjugate edible coating film for perishable fruits Approximately 30 % of global agricultural land is used to produce food that is ultimately lost or wasted, making it imperative to explore strategies for mitigating this waste. This study explored the potential of chitosan (CS) derivatives as edible coatings to extend food shelf life. Although soluble CS derivatives such as glycol CS are suitable coatings, their antimicrobial properties often diminish with increased solubility. To address this issue, gallic acid (GA), a polyphenol, was conjugated with CS using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide/ N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) chemistry to create edible coating solutions. The resulting CS-GA films exhibited remarkable solubility, mechanical strength, UV-blocking properties, and superior antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, these films exhibited a high affinity for hydrophobic fruit surfaces while also facilitating easy washing, making them an alternative for consumers who are averse to film-coated products. The CS-GA-coated fruits exhibited minimal surface spoilage, decreased mass loss, and increased firmness. Therefore, these CS-GA conjugate coatings hold significant potential as eco-friendly, edible, and washable food packaging coatings. Article Effective data reduction algorithm for topological data analysis One of the most interesting tools that have recently entered the data science toolbox is topological data analysis (TDA). With the explosion of available data sizes and dimensions, identifying and extracting the underlying structure of a given dataset is a fundamental challenge in data science, and TDA provides a methodology for analyzing the shape of a dataset using tools and prospects from algebraic topology. However, the computational complexity makes it quickly infeasible to process large datasets, especially those with high dimensions. Here, we introduce a preprocessing strategy called the Characteristic Lattice Algorithm (CLA), which allows users to reduce the size of a given dataset as desired while maintaining geometric and topological features in order to make the computation of TDA feasible or to shorten its computation time. In addition, we derive a stability theorem and an upper bound of the barcode errors for CLA based on the bottleneck distance. Article Enhancing soil C sequestration through organic matter recycling: A comparative study of paddy and upland fields Winter cover crops are expected to increase soil organic C (SOC) stocks, but the magnitude of SOC gain could be greater in paddy fields where decomposition is constrained by anaerobic soil conditions, compared to upland fields. This study examines the impact of winter cover crop recycling on SOC accumulation over two years in South Korea. Plots were established in a rice paddy field and a nearby upland maize field, and each field was fertilized with organic or chemical inputs. In chemical treatments, where no cultivation occurred during winter, synthetic fertilizers (NPK) were applied at recommended doses for rice and maize. In organic treatments, barley and hairy vetch were grown during the winter fallow season and terminated by incorporation as organic amendments in the warm cropping season, prior to planting the annual rice or maize crop. Compared with chemical treatments, no significant effect of organic treatments on grain productivity was observed. However, organic treatments increased net primary production (NPP) by 46-81 %, regardless of field conditions. The higher C inputs with organic amendments were accompanied by greater C respiration-63-73 % more in paddy fields and 15-39 % higher in upland fields-than with synthetic fertilizer. Net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) increased by 343-347 % in paddy fields and 15-39 % in upland fields under organic amendments. Consequently, rice paddy fields with organic amendments had an annual C accumulation of 1773-2168 kg C ha-1. Conversely, despite extensive recycling of winter cover crops, maize cultivated in upland fields still experienced an annual net C loss of 4663-7789 kg C ha-1. Recycling organic residues as a C source in rice paddy fields promotes SOC stock accumulation in temperate regions. Conversely, in maize upland fields, where organic plant recycling alone is insufficient for C sequestration, incorporating additional biomass, such as maize stover, is essential to offset the net SOC loss. Article Global identification of key genes for pollen germination in rice through high-throughput screening and gene editing Successful reproduction depends on the stable germination and growth of the pollen tubes (PT). However, the molecular mechanisms involved in rice PT growth and development remain largely unknown. In a previous study, microarray transcriptome analysis identified 627 genes preferentially expressed in the tricellular and germinating pollen of rice (i.e., Oryza sativa ssp. japonica). To elucidate key genes involved in the gene transfer process facilitated by male gametophytes, we systematically screened T-DNA lines containing disrupted sequences that corresponded to these 627 genes and analyzed the genotypes of heterozygote progeny from 107 T-DNA-indexed lines covering 105 genes. We found that 42 lines exhibited a distorted segregation ratio among the wild-type (WT), heterozygote (HT), and homozygote (HM) genotypes, which deviated from the expected Mendelian ratio of 1:2:1 (WT:HT:HM). Further characterization using CRISPR/Cas9 mutants revealed that knockout mutants of certain genes that exhibited segregation distortion in the T-DNA insertion region were completely sterile. Moreover, even when T-DNA insertion lines followed Mendelian segregation patterns, sterility could be induced by simultaneously mutating functionally redundant genes, thereby overcoming genetic compensation. Interestingly, although some T-DNA insertion lines exhibited segregation ratios approximating 1:1:0, the corresponding CRISPR/Cas9 mutants produced homozygous seeds and showed partial sterility. Partial sterility suggests that despite mutant pollen grains being less competitive than WT pollen, they retain their fertilization potential under relaxed competition from WT pollen. Beyond mutant-based analysis, transcriptomic profiling of sterile mutant lines provided additional insight into the regulatory relationship between key germination regulators and the 105 target genes studied here. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of a multi-pronged strategy to accelerate the identification of defective phenotypes using mutant studies and provides valuable genetic resources for inducing novel male sterility in rice. Article Green manure improves humification and aggregate stability in paddy soils Soil organic matter (SOM) is essential for soil health and carbon (C) sequestration, offering benefits in mitigating global warming. Anaerobic conditions in rice paddies alter carbon dynamics by slowing decomposition rates, with the stability of carbon depending on its form, whether labile or recalcitrant. This study aimed to evaluate whether incorporating green manure could enhance soil C quality and stability compared to conventional practice. Green manure (GM) was supplied using a winter cover crop mixture of barley and hairy vetch, while the conventional practice involved the application of only NPK fertilizer. Although GM treatment led to elevated COQ and CH4 emissions compared to NPK, it significantly improved soil physical properties, as indicated by a 21.9% increase in mean weight diameter (MWD). The incorporation of organic matter through GM in rice paddies significantly improved soil physical properties, enhancing aggregation formation and stability by 21.9 % as measured by mean weight diameter (MWD) compared to conventional NPK fertilizer. In addition, GM increased the concentration of C in the aggregate and raised the high-temperature reactive C level under 0.25 mm aggregate size. Notably, both the quantity and C content of humic acids were higher in GM-treated soils, contributing to greater carbon accrual and improved soil organic matter stability. These findings show that adopting GM-based organic matter strategies can enhance soil structure, bolster carbon stability, and improve soil quality in paddy fields, ultimately supporting sustainable agriculture. Article Inversion formulas for the attenuated conical Radon transform: Plane and cylinder case Since the invention of Compton camera imaging, the conical Radon transform, which maps a given function defined on 3-dimensional Euclidean space to its surface integrals over cones, has been studied intensively. The problem of recovering such a function from its unrestricted conical Radon transform is overdetermined, since the set of all cones depends on the three dimensions of the vertex, the two dimensions of the central axis, and the one-dimensional opening angle. Therefore, various types of restricted conical Radon transforms have also been studied. However, most of these studies have neglected the attenuation of the medium. This article presents the study of attenuated conical Radon transforms with vertices on a plane (referred to as the plane case) or the cylinder (referred to as the cylinder case) in a 3-dimensional space. In all cases, the function is integrated over conical surfaces with an additional weight that decreases with the distance to the vertex of the cones. The main results provide explicit inversion formulas for the attenuated conical Radon transform in the plane and in the cylinder case. Article Physicochemical characteristics and anti-inflammatory properties of Zophobas morio (super mealworm) protein extracted by different methods In this study, Zophobas morio protein (ZMP) was extracted via combining alkaline extraction with ultrasoundassisted (AE-UAE) or microwave-assisted (AE-MAE) extraction in comparison with their respective single extraction methods and conventional method. AE-UAE and AE-MAE exhibited a higher extraction yield (40.68 % and 36.80%, respectively) than single methods and conventional method (29.19 %-35.89 %). SDS-PAGE showed AE-UAE and AE-MAE induced new formation of smaller molecular weight proteins. Moreover, the hybrid methods decreased alpha-helix content, whereas increased beta-sheet by unfolding the structure of ZMPs. ZMPs demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory properties by ameliorating LPS-induced macrophage activation and subsequent excessive expression of immune modulators in RAW264.7 cells. Notably, at 200 mu g/mL, AE-UAE protein reduced approximately 65 % of nitric oxide and 85 % of iNOS expression, decreased TNF-alpha secretion by 35 % and IL-6 secretion by 68 %, and decreased CD80 expression by 50 %. In conclusion, the proposed hybrid methods are applicable for efficient extraction of ZMP with improved biological activities. Article Search for light long-lived particles decaying to displaced jets in proton-proton collisions at √s=13.6TeV A search for light long-lived particles (LLPs) decaying to displaced jets is presented, using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb(-1), collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022. Novel trigger, reconstruction, and machine-learning techniques were developed for and employed in this search. After all selections, the observations are consistent with the background predictions. Limits are presented on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to LLPs that subsequently decay to quark pairs or tau lepton pairs. An improvement by up to a factor of 10 is achieved over previous limits for models with LLP masses smaller than 60 GeV and proper decay lengths smaller than 1 m. The first constraints are placed on the fraternal twin Higgs (FTH) and folded supersymmetry (FSUSY) models, where the lower bounds on the top quark partner mass reach up to 350 GeV for the FTH model and 250 GeV for the FSUSY model. Article Spectrophotofluorometric assay of Sulfaguanidine in Milk whey The methylene blue fluorescence quenching and bromocresol purple spectrophotometric methods were applied to achieve the detection of sulfaguanidine in whey. The quenching of the fluorescence marker by sulfaguanidine in whey was used to elucidate the effect of the quencher on the Stern-Volmer quenching constant (KSV) values. The interaction of methylene blue with sulfaguanidine increases in whey by 3 times compared to water (KSV = 3 x 103 M- 1 and KSV = 1 x 103 M- 1, respectively). The value of the Stern-Volmer quenching constant KSV = 4 x 104 M- 1 is the highest for quenching of whey fluorescence by bromocresol purple. The obtained results were applied as a spectral method for determining the concentration of sulfaguanidine in whey. Analytic emission (348, 430 and 700 nm) and absorption (259, 435 and 590 nm) wavelengths were used. The concentration for detecting sulfaguanidine in whey was 5 x 10- 7 M (0.01 mg/mL) which is an order of magnitude lower the limit of spectrophotometric method. Article Structural safety assessment procedure of plastic single-span greenhouses considering semi-rigid clamp joints This study evaluated the structural safety of 9 greenhouse types under extreme weather loads using a nonlinear finite element method (FEM) model that accounts for material nonlinearity of clamp joint. Clamp joints were modeled as interface elements representing elastoplasticity, with stiffness and limit strength estimated through loading tests. The FEM model assessed the structural safety of the greenhouses based on allowable stress design criteria, including combined stress. Loading test on two types of clamp joints revealed that SP (Steel-plate) joints exhibited more than twice the limit strength of SW (Steel-wire) joints. This result highlights the potential structural vulnerability of low-cost greenhouses constructed exclusively with SW joints. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) results identified side rafter pipes as the most vulnerable members due to excessive stress redistributed from semi-rigid joints, while the columns were found to contribute minimally to structural performance. FS values were consistently lower under snow loads than wind loads, with nonlinear FEM showing an average FS reduction of 7.8 % and 4.7 % compared to linear FEM, respectively. Among design parameters, rafter pipe diameter had the greatest impact on FS, while purlin count had minimal influence. These results emphasize the necessity of considering semi-rigid joint behavior in greenhouse design to ensure structural safety under extreme weather conditions. The reliable nonlinear FEM framework developed in this study provides valuable insights for designing safer greenhouses and evaluating existing ones.
