○ | ○ | Article | Characteristics of spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy in South Korea: a cross-sectional study of 157 patients | Cho et al. characterize the largest sample to date of Korean patients with genetically confirmed spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, presenting genetic, electrophysiological, clinical and hormonal data. The findings will aid the interpretation of results from future clinical trials and help support early diagnosis. Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, namely Kennedy disease, is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the expansion of a CAG repeat in the first exon of the androgen receptor gene on the X chromosome. We assessed the clinical history, laboratory findings, functional scales and electrophysiological data, as well as the levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone, in 157 Korean patients with genetically confirmed spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (mean age at data collection = 56.9 years; range = 33-83 years). Hand tremor was the first symptom noticed by patients at a median age of 35 years, followed by gynaecomastia, orofacial fasciculation, cramps and fatigability in ascending order. Clinical symptoms such as paraesthesia and dysphagia appeared during the later stages of the disease. Cane use during ambulation began at a median age of 62 years. There were statistically significant differences between patients and controls in the results of sensory nerve studies, motor conduction velocity, and distal latencies. Furthermore, among the hormone markers analysed, the level of luteinizing hormone exhibited a negative correlation with the spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy functional rating scale, Korean version. However, among the patients with a disease duration of <= 5 years, the levels of luteinizing hormone showed a significant correlation with assessments using the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale-revised, spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy functional rating scale, Korean version and the 6-minute walk test. In conclusion, our findings provide clinical information from a substantial number of patients with spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy in Korea that accorded with that of patients with this disease worldwide but with updated clinical features. | Cho, Hee-Jin; Shin, Jin-Hong; Park, Young-Eun; Sohn, Eunhee; Nam, Tai-Seung; Kang, Min-Gu; Park, Jin-Mo; Park, Donghwi; Park, Jin-Sung | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Chilgok Hosp, Dept Neurol, Daegu, South Korea; Pusan Natl Univ, Yangsan Hosp, Dept Neurol, Yangsan, South Korea; Pusan Natl Univ Hosp, Dept Neurol, Busan, South Korea; Chungnam Natl Univ Hosp, Dept Neurol, Daejeon, South Korea; Chonnam Natl Univ, Chonnam Natl Univ Hosp, Med Sch, Dept Neurol, Gwangju, South Korea; Dong A Univ, Coll Med, Dept Phys Med & Rehabil, Busan, South Korea; Dongguk Univ, Coll Med, Dept Neurol, Gyeongju, South Korea; Univ Ulsan, Ulsan Univ Hosp, Coll Med, Dept Phys Med & Rehabil, Ulsan, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Chilgok Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Neurol, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Chilgok Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Neurol, Hoguk Ro 807, Daegu 41404, South Korea | ; Shin, Jin-Hong/AAZ-8809-2020 | 55937716400; 36538204000; 7405375250; 35890331200; 35170886500; 57205351774; 55569003000; 56606561400; 44061744500 | neurojspark@gmail.com; | BRAIN | BRAIN | 0006-8950 | 1460-2156 | 146 | 3 | SCIE | CLINICAL NEUROLOGY;NEUROSCIENCES | 2023 | 11.9 | 2.0 | 1.14 | 2025-06-25 | 6 | 6 | gynecomastia; paresthesia; muscular atrophy; muscle cramp; testosterone | MUTANT ANDROGEN RECEPTOR; BULBOSPINAL NEURONOPATHY; SENSORY INVOLVEMENT; MUTATIONS; DISEASE; REPEAT; PHENOTYPES; FEATURES; MOTOR; SBMA | gynecomastia; muscle cramp; muscular atrophy; paresthesia; testosterone | Adult; Bulbo-Spinal Atrophy, X-Linked; Cross-Sectional Studies; Humans; Luteinizing Hormone; Middle Aged; Muscular Atrophy; Muscular Atrophy, Spinal; Receptors, Androgen; Tremor; follitropin; luteinizing hormone; testosterone; androgen receptor; luteinizing hormone; adult; aged; Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised; Article; clinical feature; cross-sectional study; dysphagia; fasciculation; gene expression; gynecomastia; hand tremor; human; Kennedy disease; laboratory test; major clinical study; male; medical history; motor nerve conduction; muscle atrophy; muscle cramp; paresthesia; protein expression; sensory nerve; six minute walk test; South Korea; testosterone blood level; genetics; middle aged; spinal muscular atrophy; tremor | English | 2023 | 2023-03-01 | 10.1093/brain/awac198 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기
○ | ○ | Article | Common-Ground-Structured High-Reliability Single-Phase AC-AC Converters | This article proposes enhanced single-phase pulsewidth modulation buck, boost, and buck-boost-type ac-ac converters. The proposed converters, in which input and output voltages share a common ground, require no isolated voltage sensor and have no leakage current problem. The commutation problem is solved with series-connected switching cell structures without using a resistor-capacitor snubber. In addition, switching patterns are determined using only the polarity of input voltage, allowing the inductor currents to flow through switching devices during all operational modes. Because two switches are always turned on during a half-period of the input voltage, the switching loss is significantly reduced. Detailed analysis and experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed converter. | Kim, Jeonghun; Cha, Honnyong | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Energy Engn, Daegu, South Korea | 57209272612; 24450248400 | kjhking0120@knu.ac.kr;chahonny@knu.ac.kr; | IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS | IEEE T IND ELECTRON | 0278-0046 | 1557-9948 | 70 | 5 | SCIE | AUTOMATION & CONTROL SYSTEMS;ENGINEERING, ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC;INSTRUMENTS & INSTRUMENTATION | 2023 | 7.5 | 2.0 | 1.19 | 2025-06-25 | 9 | 10 | AC-AC converters; Pulse width modulation; Optical switches; Inductors; Voltage control; Snubbers; Logic gates; Ac-ac converter; common-ground; commutation; reliability; switching cell (SC) | TOPOLOGY | Aca-ac converter; common-ground; commutation; reliability; switching cell (SC) | Buck-Boost converter; Electric rectifiers; Logic gates; Optical switches; Switching; Time switches; Voltage control; Ac/ac converters; Common ground; Inductor; Input voltages; Pulsewidth modulations (PWM); Single phasis; Snubber; Switching cell; Switching cells; Pulse width modulation | English | 2023 | 2023-05 | 10.1109/tie.2022.3186388 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기
○ | ○ | Article | Development of 80-kW High-Voltage Power Supply for X-ray Generator | This article describes the development of an 80-kW high-voltage power supply (HVPS) to drive an X-ray tube. Since the developed HVPS is based on an LCC resonant converter with a symmetrical bipolar voltage multiplier (SBVM), it shows many superior features such as soft switching capability and low voltage imbalance among stages. In addition, the proposed circuit has high power density because a series resonant capacitor is removed by using a method converting the SBVM into capacitors and the full-wave rectifier. Furthermore, a suggested transformer achieves high insulation performance and effective winding area utilization by applying half of the output voltage to the core. The detailed design based on the fundamental harmonic approximation is presented for the practical use of the LCC resonant converter with the SBVM in high voltage and high power applications. Also, some significant issues in the implementation are addressed. The performance of the developed HVPS is verified by simulations and experimental results. | Son, Seong-Ho; Bae, Jung-Soo; Kim, Tae-Hyun; Gwon, Chang-Hyun; Jang, Sung-Roc; Yu, Chan-Hun; Kim, Hyoung-Suk | Univ Sci & Technol UST, Dept Energy & Power Convers Engn, Daejeon 34113, South Korea; Korea Electrotechnol Res Inst KERI, Electrophys Res Ctr, Chang Won 51543, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Energy Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Kim, Tae/AAV-5521-2020; Shon, Seongho/LOI-5826-2024; Kim, Tae/C-5935-2015; Bae, Jung-Soo/JFB-2559-2023 | 57219842388; 57195575347; 57219837559; 57486584000; 26422309700; 57190813654; 58740330300 | shson95@keri.re.kr;jsbae0324@ust.ac.kr;appleigig@keri.re.kr;kch5725@keri.re.kr;scion10@keri.re.kr;chyu@keri.re.kr;khs@keri.re.kr; | IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS | IEEE T IND ELECTRON | 0278-0046 | 1557-9948 | 70 | 4 | SCIE | AUTOMATION & CONTROL SYSTEMS;ENGINEERING, ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC;INSTRUMENTS & INSTRUMENTATION | 2023 | 7.5 | 2.0 | 1.9 | 2025-06-25 | 13 | 17 | High power resonant converter; high-voltage power supply (HVPS); voltage multiplier (VM) | LCC RESONANT CONVERTER; DESIGN; PARALLEL; APPROXIMATION | High power resonant converter; high-voltage power supply (HVPS); voltage multiplier (VM) | Power transformers; Rectifying circuits; X ray tubes; High power; High power resonant converter; High voltage power supply; High voltage techniques; Power supply; Power transformer insulation; Rectifier; Resonant converters; Voltage multipliers; Electric rectifiers | English | 2023 | 2023-04 | 10.1109/tie.2022.3181363 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기
○ | ○ | Article | Identification and comparison of the local physicochemical structures of transition metal-based layered double hydroxides for high performance electrochemical oxygen evolution reactions | Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted considerable attention as a cost effective alternative to the precious iridium- and ruthenium-based electrocatalysts for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a bottleneck of water electrolysis for sustainable hydrogen production. Despite their excellent OER performance, the structural and electronic properties of LDHs, particularly during the OER process, remain to be poorly understood. In this study, a series of LDH catalysts is investigated through in situ X-ray absorption fine structure analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our experimental results reveal that the LDH catalyst with equal amounts of Ni and Fe (NF-LDH) exhibits the highest OER activity and catalytic life span when compared with its counterparts having equal amounts of Ni and Co (NC-LDH) and Ni only (Ni-LDH). The NF-LDH shows a markedly enhanced OER kinetics compared to the NC-LDH and the Ni-LDH, as proven by the lower overpotentials of 180, 240, and 310 mV, respectively, and the Tafel slopes of 35.1, 43.4, and 62.7 mV dec(-1), respectively. The DFT calculations demonstrate that the lowest overpotential of the NF-LDH is associated with the active sites located at the edge planes of NF-LDH in contrast to those located at the basal planes of Ni-LDH and NC-LDH. The current study pinpoints the active sites on various LDHs and presents strategies for optimizing the OER performance of the LDH catalysts. ○ | ○ | Article | In-situ desalination-coupled electrolysis with concurrent one-step-synthesis of value-added chemicals | An efficient multi-functional electrolyzer with a Ni-and Fe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) anode and a binary NiMo cathode is designed for overall water splitting coupled with the desalination of saline water and production of value-added chemicals. The NiFe-LDH and NiMo pairs separated by a bipolar membrane (BPM) show overpotentials as low as those of noble metal catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions in 1 M KOH and 1 M H2SO4 solutions, respectively. Arraying anion and cation-exchange membranes (AEMs and CEMs, respectively) with BPMs (NiFe-LDH/BPM/[AEM/CEM]n/BPM/NiMo; n = 1 or 5) further enables the desalination of brackish water and seawater at specific energy consumption of 1.8 kWh m(-3), with concurrent production of HCl and NaOH. The Faradaic efficiencies of the device for O2 and H2 production are >95 % at J = 100 mA cm-2 over 20 h, while the initial pH values of the anolyte and catholyte remain unchanged. Detailed surface char-acterization of the electrocatalysts is performed, and various electrolyzer configurations are compared in nterms of desalination efficiency. | Kim, Byeong-ju; Shon, Ho Kyong; Han, Dong Suk; Park, Hyunwoong | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Energy Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Univ Technol, Sch Civil & Environm Engn, Post Box 129, Sydney, NSW 2007, Australia; Qatar Univ, Ctr Adv Mat, Dept Chem Engn, POB 2713, Doha, Qatar | Han, Dong SuK/AAX-9333-2021; Shon, Ho Kyong/P-7057-2015; Shon, Ho/P-7057-2015 | 57204095284; 6701629946; 36139213900; 7601565583 | dhan@qu.edu.qa;hwp@knu.ac.kr; | DESALINATION | DESALINATION | 0011-9164 | 1873-4464 | 551 | SCIE | ENGINEERING, CHEMICAL;WATER RESOURCES | 2023 | 8.4 | 2.0 | 2.66 | 2025-06-25 | 22 | 22 | Desalination; Bipolar membrane; Electrocatalysis; Seawater electrolysis; Acid and base | HYDROGEN EVOLUTION; WATER OXIDATION; NI; ELECTROCATALYSTS; METAL; CACO3; FE | Acid and base; Bipolar membrane; Desalination; Electrocatalysis; Seawater electrolysis | Chlorine compounds; Electrocatalysis; Electrocatalysts; Electrodes; Electrolysis; Electrolytic cells; Energy utilization; Hydrogen production; Iron compounds; Potassium hydroxide; Precious metals; Seawater; Sodium hydroxide; Acid and base; Bipolar membranes; Electrolyzers; Layered-double hydroxides; Multi-functional; One step synthesis; Overpotential; Seawater electrolysis; Value-added chemicals; Water splitting; brackish water; catalysis; catalyst; desalination; electrochemistry; electrokinesis; membrane; seawater; Desalination | English | 2023 | 2023-04-01 | 10.1016/j.desal.2023.116431 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기
○ | ○ | Article | Model matching of input/state switched asynchronous sequential machines with the external switching signal* | This article investigates the input/state model matching problem of switched asyn-chronous sequential machines (ASMs) with the external switching signal in the frame-work of corrective control theory. The considered switched ASM is governed by the external switching signal that arbitrarily changes the mode of the switched ASM, prompting the active submachine into unpredictable state drift. We address the exis-tence condition and design procedure for a proper corrective controller that matches the stable-state behavior of the closed-loop system to that of a reference model under any switching sequence. An illustrative example is provided for demonstrating the synthesis procedure of the proposed corrective controller. Compared with the prior work, the subject of this study is more challenging since rather than manipulated in favor of attaining model matching, the switching signal inflicts adversarial dynamic constraint that must be overcome by the controller. ○ | ○ | Article | Modulation of NLRP3 inflammasomes activation contributes to improved survival and function of mesenchymal stromal cell spheroids | Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are ubiquitous multipotent cells that exhibit significant therapeutic potentials in a variety of disorders. Nevertheless, their clinical efficacy is limited owing to poor survival, low rate of engraftment, and impaired potency upon transplantation. Spheroidal three-dimensional (3D) culture of MSCs (MSC3D) has been proven to better preserve their in vivo functional properties. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the improvement in MSC function by spheroid formation are not clearly understood. NLRP3 inflammasomes, a key component of the innate immune system, have recently been shown to play a role in cell fate decision of MSCs. The present study examined the role of NLRP3 inflammasomes in the survival and potency of MSC spheroids. We found that MSC3D led to decreased activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes through alleviation of ER stress in an autophagy-dependent manner. Importantly, downregulation of NLRP3 inflammasomes signaling critically contributes to the enhanced survival rate in MSC3D through modulation of pyroptosis and apoptosis. The critical role of NLRP3 inflammasome suppression in the enhanced therapeutic efficacy of MSC spheroids was further confirmed in an in vivo mouse model of DSS-induced colitis. These findings suggest that 3D culture confers survival and functional advantages to MSCs by suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activation. | Pham, Duc-Vinh; Shrestha, Prakash; Nguyen, Thi-Kem; Park, Junhyeung; Pandit, Mahesh; Chang, Jae-Hoon; Kim, Soo Young; Choi, Dong-Young; Han, Sung Soo; Choi, Inho; Park, Gyu Hwan; Jeong, Jee-Heon; Park, Pil-Hoon | Yeungnam Univ, Coll Pharm, Gyongsan 38541, South Korea; Sungkyunkwan Univ, Sch Med, Dept Precis Med, Suwon 16419, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Res Inst Cell Culture, Gyongsan 38541, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Sch Chem Engn, Gyongsan 38541, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Dept Med Biotechnol, Gyongsan 38541, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Res Inst Pharmaceut Sci, Coll Pharm, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Hanoi Univ Pharm, Dept Pharmacol, Hanoi, Vietnam; Sungkyunkwan Univ, Dept Precis Med, Suwon, South Korea | Pham, Duc-Vinh/ADZ-0036-2022; Jeong, Jee-Heon/AAC-9866-2020 | 57215573910; 57209324724; 58067064800; 57855506300; 57215575572; 24782066600; 57294374600; 8585214900; 56677047500; 56406839400; 9939639300; 49961493800; 9733179800 | parkp@yu.ac.kr;jeeheon@skku.edu; | MOLECULAR THERAPY | MOL THER | 1525-0016 | 1525-0024 | 31 | 3 | SCIE | BIOTECHNOLOGY & APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY;GENETICS & HEREDITY;MEDICINE, RESEARCH & EXPERIMENTAL | 2023 | 12.1 | 2.0 | 1.99 | 2025-06-25 | 13 | 13 | ENDOPLASMIC-RETICULUM STRESS; INDUCED APOPTOSIS; ER STRESS; MECHANISM; DEATH; INFLAMMATION; IMMUNITY; DISEASE | autophagy; ER tress; inflammasomes; MSC; spheroids | Animals; Colitis; Inflammasomes; Mesenchymal Stem Cells; Mice; NLR Family, Pyrin Domain-Containing 3 Protein; Signal Transduction; cryopyrin; cryopyrin; inflammasome; Nlrp3 protein, mouse; animal cell; animal experiment; animal model; animal tissue; apoptosis; Article; autophagy (cellular); biological model; cell function; cell survival; controlled study; dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis; down regulation; endoplasmic reticulum stress; enzyme activation; human; human cell; in vivo study; mesenchymal stroma cell; mesenchymal stromal cell therapy; mouse; NLRP3 signaling; nonhuman; protein function; pyroptosis; signal transduction; survival rate; three dimensional cell culture; animal; colitis; genetics; mesenchymal stem cell | English | 2023 | 2023-03-01 | 10.1016/j.ymthe.2022.12.014 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기
○ | ○ | Article | Platinum quantum dots-decorated MXene-derived titanium dioxide nanowire/Ti3C2 heterostructure for use in solar-driven gas-phase carbon dioxide reduction to yield value-added fuels | Solar-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction to produce valuable chemicals and fuels offers an attractive strategy in alleviating the energy crisis. Pt quantum dots (PtQDs) with TiO2 nanowire (TiO2NW)/Ti3C2 MXene heterostructures (Pt-TiO2NW/Ti3C2) with tight interfacial contacts between the various compo-nents were prepared at room temperature via oxidation reactions. The incorporated PtQDs played crucial roles as electron conduction bridges supported by the cocatalyst effect, effectively enhancing the separa-tion efficiencies of photoinduced electron/hole pairs and improving CO2 reduction under simulated solar light irradiation. The Pt-TiO2NW/Ti3C2 heterostructures exhibited remarkable carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) production at respective rates of 38.14 and 36.15 lmol g-1 after 10 h of simulated solar light irradiation, an apparent quantum yield of 1.68%, and 79.2% selectivity for CH4. The photocatalytic activities of the Pt-TiO2NW/Ti3C2 heterostructures for CO2 reduction were significantly enhanced com-pared to those of TiO2NW/Ti3C2 and the single-component photocatalysts, and they exhibited remarkable stabilities even after five cycles. In addition, the densities of states and electronic characteristics of Ti3C2 MXene and Pt-TiO2NW/Ti3C2 were studied using density functional theory, and a synergistic mechanism of the improvement in CO2 photoreduction is proposed.(c) 2023 Science Press and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. ○ | ○ | Article | Potential application of hybrid reverse electrodialysis (RED)-forward osmosis (FO) system to fertilizer-producing industrial plant for efficient water reuse | This study presents an experimental investigation and a parametric analysis of the applicability of agricultural fertigation and power generation using a reverse electrodialysis-forward osmosis (RED-FO) hybrid system, with a water stream discharged from a fertilizer-producing plant. The results of this study demonstrated the possibility of achieving high salinity power generation from the RED system utilizing high-salinity brine and low-salinity ammonia solution that simulates reverse osmosis (RO) brine and wastewater streams released by the fertilizer-producing industry. The feasibility of stream dilution for fertigation application is demonstrated when the resulting moderately saline RED effluent is introduced into the FO process as a draw solution. The effect of external load addition, flow velocities variation, and concentration changes of the working solutions on the overall stack internal resistance and, thereby, RED performance was evaluated. As such, the lowest internal resistance converged to a threshold value of 4.03 omega, giving the highest gross power density of 2.17 W/m2 when a flow velocity of 1.18 cm/s, 10 omega external load, and 0.015 M (NH4)2SO4/1 M NaCl solution pair were utilized. In addition, the effect of the number of ion exchange membrane pairs and wastewater stream recycling was studied and optimized to amplify the osmotically generated power. As a result, the most consistent power generation was achieved when using 20 pairs of membrane cells in a single-pass flow mode operation. The applicability of the RED effluent to a subsequent FO system as a draw solution (DS) was investigated, showing a dilution rate (17 %) and a conductivity (1-2 mS/cm of DS) suitable for agricultural fertigation applications. | Elmakki, Tasneem; Zavahir, Sifani; Gulied, Mona; Qiblawey, Hazim; Hammadi, Bassim; Khraisheh, Majeda; Shon, Ho Kyong; Park, Hyunwoong; Han, Dong Suk | Qatar Univ, Ctr Adv Mat, Doha, Qatar; Qatar Univ, Coll Engn, Dept Chem Engn, Doha, Qatar; Univ Technol, Fac Engn & IT, POB 123,Broadway, Sydney, NSW 2007, Australia; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Energy Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Khraisheh, Majeda/AAH-4977-2021; Shon, Ho/P-7057-2015; Han, Dong SuK/AAX-9333-2021; Shon, Ho Kyong/P-7057-2015; Qiblawey, Hazim/ITT-1036-2023 | 57221280532; 56493120500; 57204041429; 57204716475; 57206668741; 7003541562; 6701629946; 7601565583; 36139213900 | hwp@knu.ac.kr;dhan@qu.edu.qa; | DESALINATION | DESALINATION | 0011-9164 | 1873-4464 | 550 | SCIE | ENGINEERING, CHEMICAL;WATER RESOURCES | 2023 | 8.4 | 2.0 | 3.03 | 2025-06-25 | 22 | 25 | Reverse electrodialysis (RED); Forward osmosis (FO); Blue energy; Water reuse; Agricultural fertigation; Fertilizer-producing industry; Reverse osmosis (RO) brine | ION-EXCHANGE MEMBRANES; ENERGY RECOVERY; SALINE WATERS; PILOT-PLANT; POWER PRODUCTION; EXERGY ANALYSIS; WASTE-WATER; PERFORMANCE; SEAWATER; DESALINATION | Agricultural fertigation; Blue energy; Fertilizer-producing industry; Forward osmosis (FO); Reverse electrodialysis (RED); Reverse osmosis (RO) brine; Water reuse | Ammonia; Dialysis membranes; Effluents; Electrodialysis; Fertilizers; Industrial plants; Ion exchange; Ion exchange membranes; Reverse osmosis; Rivers; Wastewater reclamation; Water conservation; Agricultural fertigation; Blue energy; Energy; Fertigations; Fertilizer-producing industry; Forward osmose; Forward osmosis; Reverse electrodialysis; Reverse osmose brine; Water reuse; brine; experimental study; fertilizer; power generation; reverse osmosis; water resource; water treatment; Sodium chloride | English | 2023 | 2023-03-15 | 10.1016/j.desal.2023.116374 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기
○ | ○ | Article | Preparation and film properties of carboxymethyl cellulose from leafstalk waste of Okra: Comparative study of conventional and deep eutectic solvent pulping methods | This study valorized okra plant leafstalk (OKS), a lignocellulosic waste that accumulates on farm fields after harvesting its edible okra pods. In this context, acidic-/alkaline-based deep eutectic solvents (DES) pulping methods were compared with the conventional pulping method (NA-C) as a simple and greener isolation process of cellulose from OKS lignocellulose. Subsequently, as an initial attempt, CMCs were synthesized from celluloses obtained from OKS, and their film-forming properties were evaluated. The results showed that one-pot DES pulping expedited the isolation process by simultaneously degrading lignin, hemicelluloses, and other impurities in OKS, retaining cellulose as an unsolubilized residue. Regardless of the pulping methods, isolated celluloses exhibited a typical structure and crystalline pattern of cellulose-I. Moreover, DES-pulped celluloses had similar crystallinity and higher recovery (similar to 50%) than NA-C. The derived-CMCs exhibited variations in physicochemical properties, such as degree of substitution (0.62-0.76) and molecular weights (30.41-60.52 x 10(3) g/mol) ac-cording to cellulose pulping methods, which impacted unique film properties. Films prepared using CMC syn-thesized from alkaline DES-pulped cellulose exhibited superior water barrier and mechanical properties essential for films intended for food packaging purposes. Overall, this study successfully valorized OKS into a value-added polymer and suggested a new strategy for isolating cellulose from lignocellulosic wastes. | Olawuyi, Ibukunoluwa Fola; Park, Jong Jin; Lee, Won Young | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Food Sci & Biotechnol, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Korea Food Res Inst, Food Safety & Distribut Res Grp, Wonju 55365, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Res Inst Tailored Food Technol, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Olawuyi, Ibukunoluwa/H-1232-2018; Lee, Wonyoung/AAL-2780-2021; Park, Jongjin/AAL-3484-2021 | 57204471854; 58602432200; 57195940408 | ifolawuyi@knu.ac.kr;wonyoung@knu.ac.kr; | FOOD HYDROCOLLOIDS | FOOD HYDROCOLLOID | 0268-005X | 1873-7137 | 138 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, APPLIED;FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | 2023 | 11 | 2.0 | 1.63 | 2025-06-25 | 11 | 15 | Lignocellulosic wastes; Okra leafstalk; Valorization; Deep eutectic solvents; Carboxymethyl cellulose; Film properties | PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES; CHOLINE CHLORIDE; NANOCRYSTALS; PRETREATMENT; EXTRACTION; NANOCELLULOSE; ANTIOXIDANT; TEMPERATURE; MUCILAGE; CROP | Carboxymethyl cellulose; Deep eutectic solvents; Film properties; Lignocellulosic wastes; Okra leafstalk; Valorization | Crystallinity; Eutectics; Film preparation; Lignin; Physicochemical properties; Solvents; Alkalines; Carboxymethyl cellulose; Deep eutectic solvents; Films properties; Isolation process; Lignocellulosic wastes; Okra leafstalk; Pulping methods; Synthesised; Valorisation; Cellulose | English | 2023 | 2023-05 | 10.1016/j.foodhyd.2023.108464 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기

○ | ○ | Review | Recent progress on MOF/MXene nanoarchitectures: A new era in coordination chemistry for energy storage and conversion | The development of urbanization and industrialization leads to rapid depletion of fossil fuels. Therefore, the production of fuel from renewable resources is highly desired. Electrotechnical energy conversion and storage is a benign technique with reliable output and is eco-friendly. Developing an exceptional electrochemical catalyst with tunable properties like a huge specific surface area, porous channels, and abundant active sites is critical points. Recently, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) have been extensively investigated in the field of electrochemical energy conversion and storage. However, advances in the research on MOFs are hampered by their limited structural stability and conventionally low electrical conductivity, whereas the practical electrochemical performance of MXenes is impeded by their low porosity, inadequate redox sites, and agglomeration. Consequently, researchers have been designing MOF/MXene nanoarchitectures to overcome the limitations in electrochemical energy conversion and storage. This review explores the recent advances in MOF/MXene nanoarchitectures design strategies, tailoring their properties based on the morphologies (0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D), and broadening their future opportunities in electrochemical energy storage (batteries, supercapacitors) and catalytic energy conversion (HER, OER, and ORR). The intercalation of MOF in between the MXene layers in the nanoarchitectures functions synergistically to address the issues associated with bare MXene and MOF in the electrochemical energy storage and conversion. This review gives a clear emphasis on the general aspects of MOF/MXene nanoarchitectures, and the future research perspectives, challenges of MOF/MXene design strategies and electrochemical applications are highlighted. ○ | ○ | Article | Switching-Cell Structure-Based Generic Five-Level Current-Source Inverter | In this article, a new single-phase five-level current-source inverter is proposed. The proposed inverter provides open/short-circuit immunity and minimizes overlap time by adding four small film capacitors, thus enhancing the inverter's reliability. The efficiency and output waveforms quality are improved due to reduced overlap-time interval. The proposed inverter also provides natural balancing of the inductor currents. In addition, the n switching cells can be used to extend to the proposed N-level inverter. The operating principle, steady-state analysis, fault-state analysis, and parameter selections of the proposed inverter are presented. Furthermore, a comparative study of the proposed inverter and other five-level current-source inverters is addressed. Finally, a 1 kW prototype is implemented to verify the feasibility of the proposed inverter. | Duong, Truong-Duy; Nguyen, Minh-Khai; Nguyen, Tien-The; Cha, Honnyong; Lim, Young-Cheol; Choi, Joon-Ho | Chonnam Natl Univ, Dept Elect Engn, Gwangju 61186, South Korea; Gen Motors, Warren, MI 48093 USA; Wayne State Univ, Deparment Elect Engn & Comp Engn, Detroit, MI 48202 USA; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Energy Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea | ; Choi, Joon-Ho/F-4108-2012; Nguyen, Tien/ABX-3214-2022; DUONG, TRUONG DUY/AAC-8566-2019; Nguyen, Minh-Khai/A-2379-2016 | 57194726686; 35077214500; 59454647000; 24450248400; 7402565088; 7501392848 | duycnu@chonnam.ac.kr;minh-khai.nguyen@gm.com;thetien93@knu.ac.kr;chahonny@knu.ac.kr;yclim@chonnam.ac.kr;joono@chonnam.ac.kr; | IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS | IEEE T IND ELECTRON | 0278-0046 | 1557-9948 | 70 | 6 | SCIE | AUTOMATION & CONTROL SYSTEMS;ENGINEERING, ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC;INSTRUMENTS & INSTRUMENTATION | 2023 | 7.5 | 2.0 | 1.07 | 2025-06-25 | 10 | 9 | Current-source inverter (CSI); five-level; high reliability; natural current balancing; open-circuit; switching-cell (SC) | CURRENT-SOURCE CONVERTER; MULTILEVEL INVERTERS; TOPOLOGIES; OPERATION | Current-source inverter (CSI); five-level; high reliability; natural current balancing; open-circuit; switching-cell (SC) | Electric switches; Timing circuits; Voltage control; Current balancing; Current source inverter; Five-level; High reliability; Inductor; Inverter; Natural current balancing; Open-circuits; Pulsewidth modulations (PWM); Switching cells; Electric inverters | English | 2023 | 2023-06 | 10.1109/tie.2022.3194583 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기
